Newborn and Child Wellness Checkups: Are They Really Necessary?

Routine newborn and child wellness checkups are necessary to monitor your baby’s growth and to ensure he or she is developing properly. They’re also a great opportunity for you to see your baby’s doctor and to get any questions you have answered! Here is an overview of what happens during a wellness checkup, how frequently you’ll need to go, and why we recommend regular visits.

Why Do Doctors Encourage Wellness Checks?

The first two years of a child’s life are filled with major growth and change, and meeting important milestones now will help ensure your baby is on track to live a long and healthy life. That’s why the American Academy of Pediatrics strongly recommends frequent wellness checkups from infancy through adolescence to ensure your child is healthy and growing as he or she should.

Recommended Wellness Check Schedule

Most children should get checkups at the following milestones:

  • 3-5 days after birth
  • 1 month old
  • 2 months old
  • 4 months old
  • 6 months old
  • 9 months old
  • 12 months old
  • 15 months old
  • 18 months old
  • 24 months old
  • Annually, after the age of two

Depending on your baby’s provider and your child’s specific needs, these checkups may follow a slightly different schedule. At your first newborn and child wellness visit, be sure to ask your provider for the check-up plan their practice recommends. And, keep in mind that if your child needs to be watched closely for low weight gain or because he or she is sick, you may need extra visits.

What Happens at a Newborn and Child Wellness Checkup?

At each wellness checkup, your doctor will examine your baby and look for normal body function. They will check to see if your baby is looking and responding well, consistently growing on the curve, and meeting all developmental milestones. Your provider will also talk to you about your baby’s nutrition and general infant care. If there are any areas of concern, your doctor will discuss with you a treatment plan or refer you to a specialist, if needed. In addition, your child will get any necessary immunizations.

Vaccines at Your Child’s Wellness Checkup

Vaccines help protect your child against illness, lasting health problems, and death from a number of diseases, such as hepatitis B, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, measles, mumps, chickenpox, and more. Your primary care physician will encourage you to follow a vaccination schedule and provide your child with the appropriate vaccines during their wellness checkups. If, for any reason, you fall behind schedule, it’s important to work with your provider to get back on track in a way that works for you and your child.
